Optional Half-Day St. John Land Safari- October 31 - $142 per person

Depart the Frenchman’s Reef Dock and traveling via ferry to the Westin Resort in St. John. Once there, you will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. After everyone has had their fill, they will be escorted to their open-air safari buses, introduced to their driver/tour guide and begin a 2 to 2 1/2 hour tour of the national park system. You will have the opportunity to stop and get out to explore the Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins as well as many other look outs and attractions. After the tour, there is some time for shopping at the “Mongoose Junction” shopping area before boarding the ferry and heading back to Frenchman’s Reef.

Non-Participant Outing - Monday, November 1 - Shop Talk with Ferry Tickets for Shopping at Leisure in Downtown Charlotte Amalie

Shop Talk is an excellent way to get an overview of the downtown shopping area prior to the shopping experience. Non-Participants will get a breakdown of individual stores and the special items they are known for, as well as a map of the shopping district. Any and all questions will be answered by the knowledgeable Shop Talk presenter. Afterwards, the town awaits! Non-Participants have as much time as they want to shop, shop, shop! A return ticket for the Frenchman’s Reef Shopping Ferry is included for the return to Frenchman’s Reef at leisure.

Session I & II: DE-LEVERAGING AMERICA -Strategies for Credit Unions In Austere Times

Just as the crew of the Andrea Gail disregarded repeated warnings that they were sailing into the path of a “perfect storm,” financiers and regulators ignored multiple warnings from economists that we were amassing huge commercial and consumer debts that would inevitably wreck the global marketplace. Now that these fears have been realized, businesses, households and governments will be forced to sharply curtail spending and to disencumber themselves from $$ trillions in debt. This deleveraging will take 6 to 7 years, during which unemployment will remain high, property values and consumer spending will remain low, and CREDIT UNIONS will have to offer new products and services to meet the needs of their members as they live through a time of prolonged austerity.

Futurist David Snyder will describe the long-term economic realities brought on by the collapse of the credit and housing bubbles, and spell out the specific initiatives and innovations that will enable C.U.s to help their members sustain the quality of their members’ lives in the face of permanently diminished expectations.

David Pearce Snyder is a data-based forecaster whose thousands of seminars and workshops on strategic thinking have been attended by representatives from most of the Fortune 500 companies, as well as hundreds of local and federal government agencies, educational institutions and trade associations. Before entering private practice as a consulting futurist in 1981, Mr. Snyder was Chief of Information Systems, and later, Senior Planning Officer for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, where he designed and managed the IRS Strategic Planning System. Session I: "Values, Vision and Mission - Dealing with an Aging Board"

The last Filene study on board members and other volunteers (which was a number of years ago), revealed that the “average” board member was 60+ years of age and climbing. At the same time, the “average” CEO is about 50 years of age, while the “average” credit union member is in their mid-to-late 40s. How do we keep aging board members relevant? What are the secrets to maintaining a vibrant, active, involved board regardless of the ages of its members? This session tackles the hard answers to these tough questions. Volunteerism one of the major things that sets us apart from the banking world, but that difference must be based on board members who remain “in the know” even though the generation gap between them and the newly entering credit union members sometimes appears to large to bridge.

Session II: "Lending in the Next Millennium"

You awake on January 1, 2000 and discover the world has not exploded into fragments. This session will focus on the evolving strategies and technology critical for lending success in the 21st century. Today we employ credit scoring, tomorrow we will employ credit profiling. Today we have Internet banking, tomorrow we will deliver through multimedia financial access systems. Strategies for automobile lending to member business lending to risk-based lending will be discussed and evaluated. Lending is the cornerstone of long-term credit union success and this session will provide the basis for planning the lending future of your credit union.

 

 
About Tom Glatt:

Tom is long-term credit union professional. He is currently the President/CEO of Continental FCU in El Segundo, California and has had his hand in full-service consulting, training, and development, providing services to individual credit unions, trade associations, and regulatory agencies, nationwide.


For over sixteen years, Tom was president of a national consulting firm, working day-to-day with credit unions of all shapes and sizes, and prior to taking over at Continental FCU, was the EVP/Chief Operating Officer for a $2 billion credit union in the Northwest.

Tom is recognized as an industry expert in corporate strategic and tactical planning; operational analyses and improvement; consumer and real estate lending; and leadership and management development.


Tom holds a Masters Degree in Accountancy and is a Certified Public Accountant. He is a noted speaker, having made presentations at numerous national, regional and local conferences on behalf of the financial services industry and has also authored several articles appearing in financial services trade publications.
